Community Care

VAI’s elderly home care program serves older adults in the Cook and DuPage Counties. Multilingual home care workers who can speak languages such as Vietnamese, Chinese, or Arabic aid homebound seniors with daily tasks and household chores. In Fiscal Year 2018, VAI’s program provided 200,000 service hours to over 300 homebound seniors and employed over 200 home care workers.

Adult Literacy and Education

VAI empowers adult learners by providing English literacy courses and in doing so assisting their successful integration into American society. Our program teaches students using civic-centered lessons that encourage community involvement, societal integration, and citizenship obtainment. In Fiscal Year 2018, VAI’s Adult Literacy Advancement Program provided 65 learners with direct instruction via 30 volunteer tutors.

The Adult Literacy Program takes place on the 3rd floor of VAI Chicago from Monday through Friday and on Sundays.

    • Monday to Friday: 9:30am – 11:30am
    • Sunday: 10am-12pm

On Saturdays, the program meets at the Bezazian Branch, Chicago Public Library, located at 1226 W Ainslie St, Chicago, IL 60640, from 10am-12pm.

About Our Program:

    • English as a Second Language (ESL)
    • Citizenship and Civic Engagement
    • Open Enrollment – Join Us Anytime!
    • Flexible Schedule to Meet Student Needs
    • 1-on-1 and Small Group Instruction

Volunteers will work with adult learners preparing for their citizenship interviews and/or help them acquire the English skills needed to navigate everyday situations. Immigrant Family Resources

In partnership with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, VAI provides intensive case management services through the Immigrant Family Resource Program (IFRP). Vietnamese refugees began resettling in Chicago in the late seventies and, though the low of refugee is nearly at an end, many forms refugees have successfully sponsored relatives who continue to arrive as immigrants in significant numbers today.  Though imprecise, the statewide population is now estimated to have exceeded 30,000, with approximately two-thirds of that population residing in Chicago metropolitan area concentrated in the neighborhoods of Uptown, Albany Park, Edgewater, Rogers Park, and surrounding suburbs.
